Annual Meeting Minutes

May 12th, 2007

Meeting called to order by President Gordon Maclean.

  1. Old Business and Review of Past Year:
    1. Minutes of 2006 Meeting:
      • Minutes read by Sue Mickus.
      • Minutes accepted as read.
    2. Regularly Scheduled Events:
      1. Monday Night Ontonagon League:
        • Future for Ontonagon need 20 people next year to play profitably.
        • Need to have someone take charge.
      2. Tuesday Night Drill House League:
      3. Wednesday and Friday Night MTU Curling:
      4. Thursday Night Pick-up Curling:
    3. Special Events:
      1. Winter Carnival
  2. Drill House Use:
    1. 1st Annual Copper Spiel:
      • Report read by spiel chairperson Sue Mickus.
      • Profit $1000.00.
    2. Keweenaw Curling Club Report (MTU):
      • Seems to have a lack of direction since Pete Reno left.
      • Casey Rutkin volunteered to be liaison between both Clubs. In the fall she will work to set up interest.
      • Faculty Advisor is Brett Hamlin.
    3. Equipment:
      1. Club Sliders & Brooms: Need a few more sliders for special events and club rental.
      2. Personal Sliders & Brooms: Club members should be purchasing their own.
      3. Scraper Blade: Noel Hanson will have blade sharpened.
      4. Pebbler head: Is in great shape.
    4. Nightly Ice Prep:
      1. Responsibility, for all teams:
        • Early game teams will arrive early to set up.
        • Late game teams will stay to put everything away.
      2. Pebble: Use distilled water.
      3. Start time for early game / Speed of play:
        • Steve Woodworth to meet with teams before season to go over the set up procedures.
        • Start time will begin at 6:45 PM.
        • Skips need to take more time to go over the speed of play.
        • Leads, Seconds, Thirds, Skips responsibility after each end.
        • Need to get off the ice on time for 2nd shift to begin @ 8:45 PM.
        • Gordon Maclean will make a courtesy sign listing club rules.
    5. Financial:
      1. Dues Structure: Dues same as next year.
      2. Club Sweatshirt/T-Shirts
      3. DH Rental Policy $100.00 for 2 hours
      4. Fund Raising:
        • Sell pins and coins.
        • Casey Rudkin will organize and execute own idea for Fund Raising.
      5. How to get new curlers:
        • Brochures at Chamber of Commerce involve Main Street-Calumet.
        • Gordon Maclean to contact all old members.
        • Host a "welcome back" party and open house.
    6. Improving:
      1. Youth League: Not right now
      2. USCA Instructor Course: Gordon Maclean to email details when he gets them.
    7. Blue Key/Winter Carnival:
      • Will be held at Drill House again.
      • Theme is "Chilling Creatures With Icy Features".
    8. MTU Curling Physical Education Class:
      • Casey Rudkin to check into.
      • Probably not this year.
    9. Webmaster: Mike Mickus.
    10. Drill House Coordinator: Steve Woodworth.
    11. Financial Report by Treasurer Noel Hanson:
      • Balance of $3412.54 after all bills paid.
      • John Angst still to sent donation of $250.00.
    12. Rotary Club donation for sign: No action taken.
  3. New Business
    1. Summer Activities:
      1. Drill House Work:
        • Steve Woodworth to coordinate.
        • Pressure Cleaning/Painting Ceiling.
        • Major cleaning needed.
        • Paul Lehto to get bricks and lay into sand floor.
        • Need walkway from entrance to playing sheets.
        • Need another gas tank for propane.
        • Paint ceiling, late June or early July.
        • Need club member labor.
      2. St. Paul Curling Club work detail offer:
        • Offer from John Angst to get new trusses with 8-10 people on work detail.
        • Need to find out what is acceptable with school; we do not own the building, there is a liability issue.
        • Offer declined at this time, pending further review.
      3. De-ionizer:
        • Equipment cost $400.00 for pebble water.
        • Change to filters to make pH neutral.
        • Gordon Maclean to take water sample to be tested.
        • Test is free.
    2. New WCF Rules:
      1. 1st end hammer: Draw to button
      2. Width of sheet: Up to 5 meters
      3. Courtesy Line: Recommended additional lines across center for hog line.
      4. Burnt Stone:
        • If stone is burnt between the hog lines, it is taken out immediately.
        • After hog lines, stone allowed to come to rest, opposing skip resets stones.
      5. Mixed Doubles:
        • 2 person teams with 3 ends.
        • Thursday night available for this.
      6. 'Stick' delivery release: must release before foot crosses centerline.
    3. 2nd Annual Copper spiel:
      • Should we offer mixed doubles?
      • Lewiston coming up.
    4. "Scotch Doubles" Spiel:
  4. Miscellaneous and Other Business:
    1. Detroit CC:
      • Mixed Nationals March 15 - 22, 2008.
      • Need Statisticians or Officials.

      1. Signage:
        • On Curling Club building.
        • On green Building on Red Jacket Road.
        • Need to be weatherproof.
        • Contact Park Service and Calumet High School.
        • Steve Woodworth to contact Paul Lehto for sign on road.
      2. Brochures: Casey Rudkin to design and distribute through out the Keweenaw.
      3. Curling sign by building: Paul Eisenman to design.
  5. Election of Officers, re-elected all officers from 2006:
