Calumet Michigan is located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, a part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The "Keweenaw" is also known as the "Copper Country" due to the copper mining done from prehistoric times, through the boom days 100 years ago, until the last third of the 20th century.

The Copper Country Curling Club was formed in 1993. During the next four years we curled on natural ice in a facility shared with hockey and skating, the Lake Linden Ice Arena. Because of the lack of an ice plant, the ice conditions were dependent on outside weather. During a good winter, our season lasted only 8 to 10 weeks, with melting ice some weeks, subzero temperatures other weeks. Despite these conditions membership grew to over 40. Our proudest moment was when a CCCC sponsored rink was runner up in the 1996 College Curling Championship.
At the peak of our enthusiasm, we suffered two warm winters in a row which considerably shortened the season. Then the Village of Lake Linden arena closed permanently. From 1997 till 2002 the CCCC had no home ice to curl on. Despite that we remained a ‘paper’ club with a significant portion of our peak membership. Our curling was limited to the bonspiel circuit. With the excitement of curling in the Olympics, we were allowed a saturday night slot at Houghton's Dee Stadium for the winter of 2002/2003 so we were back on ice again. We curled at 'The Dee' until we could move into the Drill House in the Winter of 2005.
DRILL HOUSE PROJECT - A NEW RINK
The Copper Country Curling Club is pleased to present a major Historical Building Renovation for its new curling facility. In cooperation with the Keweenaw Historical National Park and Calumet Township, the CCCC is looking forward to converting the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company’s Drill Shop into a permanent curling facility. The Drill Shop was built around 1885 to manufacture and maintain drills used in Calumet and Hecla’s copper mines. By 1908 the company was using 318 of these drills. The project represents the combined efforts of the Copper Country Curling Club, Calumet Township, and the National Park Service, Keweenaw National Historical Park. Calumet Township finds curling to be a highly compatible use for the Drill Shop. The building is located just a few hundred feet from Calumet High School and close to other winter sport activity centers. There is potential for a HS physical education and weekend youth curling program. Township officials are excited to have the CCCC as a neighbor, and looks forward to seeing curlers visiting Calumet for future bonspiels. Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) are interested in preserving and restoring the Drill Shop for its historical value. The building is basically sound but has several structural problems that require immediate repair. The KNHP considers Curling to be an ideal use for the Drill Shop. Curling does not require significant modifications that would change the historic flavor of the structure internally or externally. For the CCCC, the Drill Shop provides the opportunity for a distinctive home to base the growth of Curling in the Copper Country. The current configuration offers room for 2 sheets of ice, locker rooms, concession, social area, raised viewing, storage and physical plant. A portion of the building is currently reserved for future expansion. A second wing with two more ice sheets can easily be added.
We need your help to make this dream a reality. Calumet Township and KNHP are in the process of locating funds to restore the current structure and to bring utilities up to modern code. The CCCC is responsible for internal modifications for curling. To meet it’s obligation the CCCC has set a fund raising goal of $100,000. We hope that you find this a worthy effort and would assist us in bringing a permanent curling home to Michigan’s Copper Country. There are several support levels to choose from. All donations of at least $50 will be rewarded with a Founders Pin. Special considerations will be given for a donation greater than those categories listed in the form.
